The son of Charles Lamed, Sylvester was also a lawyer. Born in Detroit on September 23, 1820, Sylvester Larned graduated from Yale University in 1842. He studied law and practiced in Detroit until 1861. He became a lieutenant colonel of the 2nd Michigan Infantry during the Civil War, but resigned because of sickness in 1862.
